What is this year’s Fund a Need?
KIK is partnering with the KSPTA to fund student-centered grants that will help teachers at both Bacich and Kent.
Why did you choose this to be the Fund a Need?
Typically, the KSPTA has funded and managed a valuable district wide grant program, but such a grant program has increasingly been impossible to provide due to certain PTA budget limitations. With ongoing decreased budget limitations and decreased fundraising revenue due to school closures, KIK would like to join forces with the KSPTA to fund grants in order to empower, support and inspire our teachers.
What are some past grants that have been allocated to each school?
-3D printer for Mr. Bessonette’s IDEA class to carve students designs into wood or plastic
-Materials for the garden
-Peace path for kindergarten class
-Poetry classes for 4th graders
-School visit with artist Rafael Lopez to launch Community Art Fence project
-Instruments for Mr. Martinez’s music class
-Speaker for the All School Read
-Science dissection materials
-New cameras for the broadcast
What are some ideas for grants for next year?
-Science and technology equipment
-Kent library reading/puzzles space
-We can’t wait to see what teachers will decide what will be valuable for their classrooms!
Why can’t we do a fund a need for a teacher’s salary or a paraprofessional’s salary?
KIK is restricted from raising money for salaries for Fund a need because it is an ongoing expense that the District cannot assume once the funding goes away.
There is also an objection to funding paraprofessionals when teaching positions are being reduced.
How will you decide what grants to fund?
The grant committee, which will be made up of both KIK and KSPTA members, will provide applications to teachers at both schools. The committee will make sure that all grade levels at both schools will benefit from at least one grant.
